Prof. Vladimir B. Betelin

Prof. V. Betelin was born on August 8, 1946 in Kineshma, Moscow Region. In 1970 he graduated from the School of Mechanics and Mathematics, Moscow State University.  In 1981 he defended a PhD dissertation, and in 1986 he earned his Doctor of Science degree. He became Full Professor in 1991. In 1997 he was elected a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Science, Computer Science, Computing, and Automation Division (majoring in Automated Software Development). In 2003 he became a full RAS member, IT and Computing Division (majoring in IT and Automation).

Prof. V. Betelin is a renowned expert in IT and automation. He has made a significant contribution to theoretical and applied research in software applications development, interactive computer graphics and geometrical modeling, engineering CAD (computer-aided design) systems. In 1980–1991 he supervised the development and deployment of engineering CAD systems at AMO ZIL tuck manufacturer, and BESTA, the first family of domestic graphic workstations.

For many years V. Betelin was a professor in the School of Mechanics and Mathematics, Moscow State University. He has authored a number of tutorials for students. In 1975–1988 at MSU he supervised the development and academic implementation of tutorial compilers with extended diagnostic functionality, dialog tools to access application packages, and a number of other systems.

Prof. V. Betelin in 1984–1986 was Head of Laboratory, Cybernetics Committee, USSR Academy of Sciences. In 1986–1988 he worked as Vice Director for Research, Computer-Aided Design Institute, USSR Academy of Sciences, as Acting Director in 1989-1990, and as Director between 1990 and 2015. Now he is Scientific Adviser, System Analysis Research Institute (a Federal Research Center, Russian Academy of Sciences). Since 1997 V. Betelin has been Director, Microtechnologies Institute, Kurchatov Research Institute. Since 2010 he is Scientific Adviser for supercomputing technology development and non-defense industrial applications, Russian Federal Nuclear Research Center, Institute for Experimental Physics.

Currently Prof. Betelin’s areas of research are supercomputing technology, supercomputer architecture and hardware. Prof. Betelin’s major achievements for the last 20 years include: a secure hardware and software platform, domestic 32- and 64-bit RISC-microprocessors, submicron VLSI, a domestic real-time operating system, advanced automated application development tools, a domestic submicron (0.5/0/35/0/25 m) VLSI production line.

Prof. V. Betelin is a member of the Research and Engineering Committee, Russian Defense Industry Commission, a  member of the Governmental Commission on IT Applications to Enhancing Life Quality and Business Environment, a member of the Nanotechnologies and IT Subcommittee, Russian Government’s Awards Committee, a member of the Research and Engineering Committee, OAO ROSNANO, a member of the Consultation Committee, NCO Development Fund, Center for New Technologies Development and Commercialization (Skolkovo), a member of the Editorial Board, Journal of Basic and Applied Mathematics, MSU , Vice Chief Editor, Journal of IT and Computing Systems, RAS.

Prof. V. Betelin is a Head, High Performance Computing Dept., MSU.  He has been a scientific adviser to one Doctor of Science and 8 PhD students.

Prof. V. Betelin has authored and co-authored 111 papers including 12 monographs, and 1 patent.

Prof. V. Betelin was awarded the Russian National Award in 2005, and the Russian Government Research and Engineering Excellence Award in 2014. He has been awarded a Medal of the Order of Merit for the Motherland, 2nd rank, and the Order of Friendship.
