Prof. Smirnov was born in 1954 in Moscow. He graduated from the School of Mechanics and Mathematics in 1976, Doctor of Science (Phys&Math) (1990), Professor (1994), Shuvalov Award winner (1993), a corresponding member of the Engineering Academy (1992), Vice Chairman, Explosion and Combustion Studies Board, RAS Presidium (1999), a member of the International Combustion Institute (1992), a member of the Russian National Theoretical and Applied Mechanics Committee (2001), a member of the International Astronautics Academy (2005). He is a winner of a Keldysh Medal and a Korolev Medal (Russian Spaceflight Federation), a Grabin Medal from the Russian Academy of Artillery and Rocket Science, a Rakhmatullin Medal (the Russian National Theoretical and Applied Mechanics Committee, 2010), a 250th Anniversary of MSU sign.

Prof. Smirnov works in the following areas: dynamics of physically and chemically transforming multiphase medium, basic environmental protection problems, mathematical modeling of spacecraft debris evolution, traffic flow. He has published over 200 research papers. He has been a scientific adviser to two Doctor of Science and 15 PhD students.
